Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The first time she appeared on TV was two episodes on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Parents, however, would not let her take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry claimed she was shy to do any acting at the age of 16, but she began acting at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California and pursue a career as a theatre actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In 2015, Perry appeared together with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning Drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, she played a recurring role on the ABC Political thriller Scandal starring her father. She was also cast in her role on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The actress was chosen for the part despite the close family connection to the character.
